For years, I was always too busy to exercise — and my waist showed it. I have to give credit to my wife, my doctor and my dog for forcing me to get in gear and take control of my health. My wife was the one who kept hounding me to make an appointment with the doctor for a checkup. I hadn‘t been there for a long time, and I had this idea I was in pretty good shape for my age. That‘s why I was pretty taken aback when he said I was overweight. (I thought my clothes were shrinking.) It was embarrassing, but he took the time to convince me that with some small changes, I could turn things around before my weight really got to be a problem. I don‘t have a lot of time to hit the gym, but I decided I could get started by just taking my dog on a good walk every morning before work. It quickly became part of my morning routine, one that I actually look forward to now. My dog loves it, I enjoy seeing the other dog walkers in the neighborhood and it feels great to start my day with a little physical exercise. It‘s not a big change, and I need to do more, but for me it‘s a step (actually many steps) in the right direction.
